The increase in bullying incidents in schools across Nigeria has sparked widespread concern and urgency for action. As a non-governmental organization that advocates for child protection and safeguarding, the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Nigeria acknowledges the pressing need to address these issues directly and prioritize the safety and well-being of every child in our educational institutions.
Firstly, we, AWLA Nigeria, vehemently condemn the reprehensible act of bullying in schools. Bullying not only inflicts physical and emotional harm on its victims but also creates a toxic environment that undermines the very foundation of learning, growth, and emotional development. It is a violation of the fundamental rights of children and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.
In light of these disturbing events, we call for implementing a robust Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy in all schools across Nigeria. Such a policy must encompass comprehensive measures to prevent, identify, and address instances of bullying and provide support and recourse for victims and their families. It is imperative that every child feels safe, valued, and respected within child-centered institutions and organizations such as the school environment, and a well-defined policy is essential to upholding these principles.
Furthermore, we extend our appreciation to the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, for taking decisive action against the school where the recent bullying incident occurred. The swift and firm sanction sends a clear message that bullying will not be tolerated and those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.
We commend the Minister’s commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of all students and urge continued vigilance and enforcement of policies to prevent future occurrences.
The fight against bullying in schools requires collective efforts from government agencies, educational institutions, civil society organizations, parents, and communities. Let us unite in solidarity to create a safe and nurturing environment where every child can thrive and fulfill their potential.
Together, we can build a future where every child is protected, respected, and empowered to succeed.
Warm regards,
CAROLINE IBHARUNEAFE MRS
